Evaluating the Image Quality of Closed Circuit Television Magnification Systems Versus a Head-Mounted Display for People With Low Vision

Abstract: In this research, image analysis was used to optimize the visual output of a traditional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) magnifying system and a head-mounted display (HMD) for people with low vision. There were two purposes: (1) To determine the benefit of using an image analysis system to customize image quality for a person with low vision, and (2) to have people with low vision evaluate a traditional CCTV magnifier and an HMD, each customized to the user's needs and preferences. A CCTV system can electroni… Show more

“…For examples, the colors from the sunrise and sunset imitating lamp are measured as R = 255, G = 255 and B = 57. The corresponding CIE chromaticity coordinate values [20,21] The matching results for the sunrise and sunset imitating lamp image and the RGB and CIE coordinates of a sunset image are shown as Fig. 8(B).…”

“…To our surprise, only 20 of the 90 low-vision studies recruited participants with low vision (notable examples include Bowman & Liu, 2017 ; Powell, Powell, & Cook, 2020 ; Miura et al., 2018 ; Hoppe et al., 2020 ; Lin, Jan, Lay, Huang, & Chen, 2014 ; for the full list, please refer to the annotated spreadsheet in the Supplementary Materials ), all of which were interested in studying how their oculomotor behavior differed from that of sighted people. Nine of 20 papers were interested in understanding how VR could be used to assess the behavior of BLV users.…”

“…After considerable technological evolution, HMDs currently available such as the redesigned Jordy (Enhanced Vision Systems, Huntington Beach, California, USA), NuEyes Pro Smartglasses (NuEyes USA, Newport Beach, California, USA), CyberTimez Cyber Eyez (Cyber Timez, Winchester, Virginia, USA), Evergaze seeBOOST (Evergaze, LLC, Richardson, Texas, USA) and IrisVision (Visionize, LLC, Berkeley, California, USA), became smaller and lighter. Their performances have been compared with traditional optical LVAs (ie, magnifiers, closed circuit television, telescopic systems) 11. The importance of training in the use of HMDs was demonstrated for distant and intermediate vision compared with traditional LVAs 12.…”
