Agriculture across the globe needs to produce "more with less." Productivity should be increased in a sustainable manner so that the environment is not further degraded, management practices are both socially acceptable and economically favorable, and future generations are not disadvantaged. The objective of this paper was to compare the environmental efficiency of 2 divergent strains of Holstein-Friesian cows across 2 contrasting dairy management systems (grazing and nongrazing) over multiple years and so expose any genetic × environment (G × E) interaction. The models were an extension of the traditional efficiency analysis to account for undesirable outputs (pollutants), and estimate efficiency measures that allow for the asymmetric treatment of desirable outputs (i.e., milk production) and undesirable outputs. Two types of models were estimated, one considering production inputs (land, nitrogen fertilizers, feed, and cows) and the other not, thus allowing the assessment of the effect of inputs by comparing efficiency values and rankings between models. Each model type had 2 versions, one including 2 types of pollutants (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen surplus) and the other 3 (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen surplus, and phosphorus surplus). Significant differences were found between efficiency scores among the systems. Results indicated no G × E interaction; however, even though the select genetic merit herd consuming a diet with a higher proportion of concentrated feeds was most efficient in the majority of models, cows of the same genetic merit on higher forage diets could be just as efficient. Efficiency scores for the low forage groups were less variable from year to year, which reflected the uniformity of purchased concentrate feeds. The results also indicate that inputs play an important role in the measurement of environmental efficiency of dairy systems and that animal health variables (incidence of udder health disorders and body condition score) have a significant effect on the environmental efficiency of each dairy system. We conclude that traditional narrow measures of performance may not always distinguish dairy farming systems best fitted to future requirements.

As one of the new agricultural business subjects, family farms are the main force behind the development of agriculture and the leader of agricultural modernization in China. At present, the development of family farms in Inner Mongolia is on the rise, but there are still many problems, so it is crucial to evaluate the development of family farms to find out the problems for targeted development. In this paper, first, after double-screening objective data of family farm development evaluation indexes through the combination of the gray correlation degree and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, we constructed an index system for evaluating family farm development including 19 indexes, such as whether to register a business license. Second, based on the index system constructed in the previous step, the index weight vector was measured using the AHP–entropy weight method, which reflects the cognitive experience of experts, while taking into account the objective laws of data. Next, based on the index weight, the scores of 755 family farms were calculated to measure the level of development of family farms, and the ratings were divided into three categories based on the scores using K-mean cluster analysis. The study found that: (1) The weight of the indicator on the rank of the new professional farmer was 0.102, ranking first; the weight of the indicator on whether the children of the person in charge have the intention to engage in farming and animal husbandry was 0.091, ranking second; and the weight of the indicator on the number of basic production facilities and necessary machinery and equipment was 0.088, ranking third. (2) The highest score of 755 family farms in Inner Mongolia was only 50.161 points, and the overall development of family farms was at an average level. Therefore, based on the results of the study, five paths were proposed to enhance the development of family farms.

High feed prices and a high proportion of feed costs cause the profitability of fish farming businesses to decline. One of the government's efforts to reduce feed costs is encouraging fish farmers to produce their feed using local raw materials through Self-Sufficiency Fish Feed Program. This study aims to analyze program’s impact on the fish farming performance using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method. Performance is measured by cost, revenue, profit, R/C ratio, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), and technical efficiency which estimated using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The results show that program implementation at the fish farmer's level has not positively impacted the fish farming business's performance. The results of the PSM analysis show that the program significantly impacts on costs, revenue, profit, R/C ratio, FCR, and technical efficiency. Farmers with programs have a higher average cost and FCR than farmers without programs. The fish farmers with program have a lower revenue, profit, R/C ratio and technical efficiency than fish farmers without program. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the main cause the program has not had a positive impact on the fish farming businesses performance is the quality of self-sufficiency fish feed. Therefore, the recommended policy is to create a system for supplying local raw materials with good quality, increasing feed formulation training and need specialize by forming group of self-sufficiency fish feed producers separated from the fish farming group.
