Evaluating the Relationship Between Serum Level of Interleukin-6 and Rheumatoid Arthritis Severity and Disease Activity

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between Interlukin-6 (IL-6) serum level and the severity and activity of RA. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 120 RA patients referred to the rheumatology clinic, the patients were diagnosed by rheumatologists according to ACR / EULAR 2010 criteria. Based on Based on DAS28 score the patients were divided into 4 groups: Remission, Mild, Moderate and Severe. Each group contained 30 patients. Serum levels of ESR, CRP, anti-cyclic citrullinated pe… Show more

“…As expected, in comparison with parameters for RA disease activity, VEGF and IL-6 levels were correlated with TJC, SJC, ESR, CRP, and DAS28 (Fig. 3b), consistent with earlier reports [16][17][18]34,35 . In addition, as shown in the heat map and correlation plots in Fig.…”

“…As IL-6 is necessary for the induction of IL-17A production by neutrophils [28, 29], we measured the serum levels of IL-16, which were increased in RA patients (7.99 ± 16.7 pg/ml in RA vs 0.67 ± 1.18 pg/ml in HC). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between IL-6 serum levels and DAS28-CRP ( p < 0.0001, r = 0.39), as others have observed [3032], but IL-6 levels did not correlate with an increased numbers of IL-17A+ neutrophils (data not shown).…”

“…It is also associated with increased susceptibility of diseases such as diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. [ 41 42 ] Leptin plays a dual role as a hormone and as a cytokine, affecting endocrine functions, bone metabolism, energy homeostasis, and of inflammatory responses. [ 43 ] Therefore, it appears that the interaction of obesity and periodontitis increases the levels of some IM to a greater extent than when these conditions act separately, suggesting that obese patients with periodontitis may be at an even increased risk for systemic complication related to systemic inflammatory burden.…”
