Evaluating the viability of the use of T‐bar and radiotelemetry tags on prespawn Arctic Lampreys

Mary C. Spanos,
Curry J. Cunningham,
Katie A. Drew
et al.

Abstract: ObjectiveArctic Lampreys Lethenteron camtschaticum are harvested by subsistence and commercial fisheries in the Yukon–Kuskokwim River region of Alaska; however, baseline population data are deficient. For mark–recapture and telemetry studies to be effectively implemented to assess Arctic Lamprey abundance, migratory and dispersal patterns, and spawning locations, tags must not impact fish survival, physiology, or behavior.MethodsFor this laboratory evaluation, we examined survival, tag retention, swim enduranc… Show more

“…Papers in this issue report on critical conservation needs, including methods evaluating phylogenetic standing (Brino et al 2023, this special section) and estimating lamprey size and age (Pelekai et al 2023, this special section). Litts et al (2023, this special section) and Spanos et al (2023, this special section) describe and evaluate collection and tagging approaches for field studies of adult lampreys. Harris et al (2023) and Liedtke et al (2023) provide guidance for dewatering and salvage efforts.…”
