Evaluation & comparison of ranging using Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) and 1090 MHz Mode S Extended Squitter (Mode S ES)

Abstract: The FAA Alternative Position Navigation and Timing effort is developing technologies to provide navigation service capable of sustaining operations in the event of the loss of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). APNT will utilize existing ground infrastructure to support this capability. One effort is to examine the use of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) ground infrastructure for ranging. This paper examines the use the two transmitted ADS-B signals: 1) 1090 MHz Mode S Extended S… Show more

“…For example, a Universal Access Transceiver also modulates its signal to keep the transmitted energy in a DME channel. 8,10 In general, transmitting the CDMA signals in DME channels is not allowed without changing the spectrum allocation. However, the operational frequency of the Mosaic pseudolite is not limited in DME channels.…”

“…[6][7][8] Another approach is passive ranging, broadcasting one-way signals, such as pseudolites that use DME signals, and automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) signals. [8][9][10] Multilateration (MLAT), which uses ADS-B signals for surveillance, has also been studied. 11 A Mosaic system for alternative position, navigation, and timing (APNT), known as Mosaic/DME, was presented in 2012 12 as a new terrestrial-based solution to replace legacy navigation systems.…”

“…To minimize the effects to DME channels, the bandwidth of the Mosaic signal is recommended to be limited to the maximum transmitted energy within one DME channel width (1 MHz), thus regulating code chipping rate. For instance, a Universal Access Transceiver also modulates its signal to keep the transmitted energy in one DME channel . The onboard receiver (DME interrogator) processes the DME signal and is also required to have phase tracking for the carrier phase measurements attained from the pseudolite signals.…”

“…Moreover, an enhanced DME, which uses the concept of the DME carrier phase, can significantly improve the performance of the DME . Another approach for the APNT is using passive ranging, broadcasting one‐way signals, such as pseudolites that use DME signals, and Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS‐B) signals . Multilateration (MLAT), which uses ADS‐B signals for surveillance, was also studied as a candidate for the APNT .…”

“…Псевдосупутникова мережа з використанням універсальних бортових прийомо-відповідачів (UAT) є одним з двох стандартів для передачі місцеположення ПК та аеронавігаційних даних [9,16]. Сигнал вимірювання відстані міститься у наземній частиці цифрового повідомлення UAT, що використовується для передачі сигналів з наземних станцій мережі ADS-B.…”
