Evaluation and Analysis of Variance of Storage Stability of Asphalt Binder Modified by Nanotitanium Dioxide

Abstract: To investigate the effects of nanoparticle content, storage time, and storage temperature on the storage stability of asphalt binders modified by nanoparticles, hot tube storage tests, softening point tests, and dynamic-shearing rheometer (DSR) tests were adopted to evaluate the properties of two kinds of nanotitanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) modified asphalt binders. A statistical one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was employed to analyze the effects of those variations on the storage stability of the nano-TiO… Show more

“…The storage stability test is used to analyze whether the modifier gets separated from the asphalt binder easily at high temperatures or not. 43,44 This test is performed to examine the homogeneity of the modified asphalt binder. Various kinds of modifiers used in the binder modification suffer from a major drawback of phase separation when stored at high storage temperatures.…”

“…The top and bottom sections were heated and poured into rings for a softening point test. For a stable storage sample, the difference in the softening point of the top and bottom sections should be less than 2.2 • C. Although the softening point test is the most common method to determine the storage stability, it is not highly accurate [16]. For accuracy, the performance grades of all of the three sections were also determined by using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) to ensure the homogeneous mixing of the GNPs in the binder.…”

“…The performance grades of the top and bottom sections of the samples for all of the blends were also determined using a DSR to ensure the homogeneous dispersion of the GNPs in the asphalt binder, as the rheological characterization of the binder is affected by its composition [16]. The performance grades of the binders did not vary between the sections.…”

“…To improve and enhance all aspects of the performance of the bio-asphalt, one or more modifiers are adopted [11][12][13]. More and more nanomaterials are being used in the field of pavement materials currently, such as nano-clay, nano-SiO 2 , nano-TiO 2 , and nano-ZnO to enhance the performance of the asphalt and the mixture [14][15][16]. Compared to other nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) used as a modifier for asphalt binders has attracted more and more attention recently.…”
