Evaluation and Characterization of Mouse Scratching Behavior by a New Apparatus, MicroAct

Abstract: We evaluated and characterized the mouse scratching behavior using a new apparatus, MicroAct. Scratching behavior was evoked in ICR and BALB/c mice by compound 48/80, passive cutaneous anaphylaxis or repeated hapten application. Under the present experimental condition, MicroAct detected consecutive scratching behavior (events) consisting of 3 or more beats. Although the detecting standard of MicroAct was not identical to that of an observer, the number of events detected by MicroAct and by an observer were al… Show more

“…The electric current induced in the coil by the movement of magnets attached to the hind paws was amplified and recorded. 17) Vascular Permeability of the Skin in Mice The increase in vascular permeability was assessed as described by Inagaki et al 18) After the intradermal injection of 0.5 mg/ 0.02 ml compound 48/80 or 10 nmol/0.02 ml histamine into the rostral part of the back, 1.25 mg of Evans blue was intravenously injected into each animal. The mice were sacrificed 30 min after elicitation of the cutaneous reactions, and the reaction site was excised.…”

“…The electric current induced in the coil by the movement of magnets implanted to the hind paws was amplified and recorded. The number of scratching behaviors was measured using a new device, MicroAct (Neuroscience, Tokyo), which automatically detects and evaluates the scratching behavior of mice (25,26). The MicroAct Parameters for detecting waves were threshold: 0.1 V, event gap: 0.2 s, minimum duration: 1.5 s, maximum frequency: 20 Hz, and minimum frequency: 2 Hz.…”

“…Inagaki et al planted a metal marker under the skin of a laboratory animal N. Inagaki (2003) and reported the benefits of MicroAct. It is a quantitative scratching analysis system that utilizes magnetic field fluctuations when the metal marker vibrates violently as a result of scratching.…”
