[1] A simple technique is introduced to control hydraulic fractures in laboratory samples. This is achieved by heating or cooling samples prior to injecting the fracturing liquid, so that the induced thermal stresses govern the fracture orientation. We developed a simple theoretical model to parameterize experiments in laboratory settings and for materials that are different from ours. We also illustrate the utility of the technique with two examples: (1) mixed mode I + III hydraulic fracture propagation and (2) visualization of the fluid flow in the created fracture. In some cases, a similar technique may also be applicable for controlling the orientation of hydraulic fractures in field conditions.

SummaryThis paper presents an algorithm and a fully coupled hydromechanical-fracture formulation for the simulation of three-dimensional nonplanar hydraulic fracture propagation. The propagation algorithm automatically estimates the magnitude of time steps such that a regularized form of Irwin's criterion is satisfied along the predicted 3-D fracture front at every fracture propagation step.A generalized finite element method is used for the discretization of elasticity equations governing the deformation of the rock, and a finite element method is adopted for the solution of the fluid flow equation on the basis of Poiseuille's cubic law. Adaptive mesh refinement is used for discretization error control, leading to significantly fewer degrees of freedom than available nonadaptive methods. An efficient computational scheme to handle nonlinear time-dependent problems with adaptive mesh refinement is presented. Explicit fracture surface representations are used to avoid mapping of 3-D solutions between generalized finite element method meshes. Examples demonstrating the accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency of the proposed formulation, regularized Irwin's criterion, and propagation algorithm are presented.

The produced water from cation exchanger regeneration processes has been enriched by calcium and magnesium salts (very hard water). In this research, extraction of calcium and magnesium salts in the form of magnesium and calcium hydroxide (Lime) will carry out during adjusting pH of cation regeneration wastewater by adding anion regeneration wastewater. The extracted salts were dried and characterized by using chemical analysis, IR spectrum and X-ray analysis. Results indicated that an increase in the addition of anionic wastewater to cationic wastewater up to 60% caused a decrease in total hardness, magnesium hardness and calcium hardness concentrations in cationic wastewater up to 80%. However, the maximum percentage recovery of calcium salts obtained at pH values between10-11, while those of magnesium salts were between11-12.
