Évaluation de la vitesse de déplacement de la charge de fond caillouteuse dans le lit de rivières ardennaises au cours des trois derniers siècles, à partir de l’étude des scories métallurgiques

Abstract: Bedload progression has been evaluated in three Ardennes rivers using slags coming from old ironworks settled in the south Ardennes valleys at the early XVIIth century. Several slags have been found 12 km downstream the closer iron factory, which produces a bedload wave progression of about 3 km per century. A relationship is drawn between the slag size and the distance from the ironworks where these slags have been thrown down in the river. This exponential curve shows first a rough decrease of particles size… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the longitudinal evolution of slag size in the Rulles River and its continuation into the Semois River. Our study is based on measurements carried out by Sluse and Petit (1998). Additional sampling was carried out in order to better define the sorting reaches downstream of injection sites and to determine the slag size at the different injections sites.…”

“…Using these parameters, the specific stream power at the bankfull discharge (Q b ) was estimated in the studied reaches using the following equation: Sluse and Petit, 1998. Detailed results are presented for two rivers, the Rulles and the Viroin. On both of these rivers, ironworks were located at the head of the catchment, and activity at these sites ceased a long time ago.…”

“…For centuries, huge quantities of slag elements were dispersed in the bedload and transported by floods of varying magnitudes. Consequently, slag may be considered as a reliable tracer to analyse bedload dispersion over several centuries (Sluse and Petit, 1998;Houbrechts et al, 2011).…”

“…Lastly, slag particles from the ancient iron industry have been used to estimate the bedload velocity in some gravel-bed rivers of the Ardenne Massif. In two of these rivers, velocity has been estimated at between 2 and 4 km/century (Sluse and Petit, 1998;Houbrechts et al, 2011).…”
