Évaluation de la vitesse de déplacement de la charge de fond caillouteuse dans le lit de rivières ardennaises au cours des trois derniers siècles, à partir de l’étude des scories métallurgiques

Abstract

Bedload progression has been evaluated in three Ardennes rivers using slags coming from old ironworks settled in the south Ardennes valleys at the early XVIIth century. Several slags have been found 12 km downstream the closer iron factory, which produces a bedload wave progression of about 3 km per century. A relationship is drawn between the slag size and the distance from the ironworks where these slags have been thrown down in the river. This exponential curve shows first a rough decrease of particles size which fall from 80 mm to 20- 30 mm in diameter in less than 5 km; afterwards the slag size only decreases slowly. Thus an hydraulic sorting occurs in the few kilometres following the throwing down site. Downstream, the slags size which remains almost constant regardless of the distance, gives an indication about the true competence of the river. The particle size (9-12 mm with regards to equivalent diameters using a density of 2.65) appears small but is explained by the low values of the unit stream power (25-30 W.m -2 ).La vitesse de déplacement de la charge de fond de trois rivières ardennaises a pu être estimée de façon indirecte grâce à la présence de macroscories, résidus de l'ancienne industrie métallurgique qui s'est établie au début du XVII e siècle dans les vallées du sud de l'Ardenne. Des éléments ont été retrouvés 12 km en aval de la forge la plus proche, ce qui donne une vitesse de progression de la charge de fond d'un peu plus de 3 km par siècle. Une relation a été établie entre la taille des éléments et la distance qui les sépare des forges où elles ont été rejetées ; cette relation de type exponentiel montre tout d'abord une diminution rapide de la taille des éléments qui passent de près de 80 mm à 20- 30 mm en moins de cinq km, suivie d'une absence de décroissance de la taille du matériel. Il s'opère donc un tri hydraulique dans les premiers kilomètres suivant le lieu d'injection. D'autre part, la taille des éléments, qui en aval reste constante quelle que soit la distance, donne une indication quant à la compétence réelle de cette rivière ; la taille de ce matériel (9-12 mm en terme de diamètre équivalent de densité 2,65) apparaît faible mais se justifie par le fait que la rivière développe des puissances spécifiques peu importantes (25-30 W.m -2 ).Die Transportgeschwindigkeit der Geschiebelast von drei Flüssen in den Ardennen konnte indirekt berechnet werden, dank des Vorkommens von Makroschlacken. Long-term bedload mobility in gravel-bed rivers using iron slag as a tracer
