The paper is devoted to the measurement and to the processing of load spectra of forces and moments acting at the wheel hub of a motorcycle. Smart wheels (SWs) have been specifically developed for the scope. Throughout the paper, the extreme case of a race motorcycle is considered. Accurate load spectra were measured in two race circuits. Standardized load spectra are derived by processing measured data. A way to easily generalize the measured load spectra is proposed for the first time for motorcycles. Several loading conditions, related to the motorcycle straight line motion, cornering, curb hit and gear shift, are identified and extracted from the experimental measures. For each loading condition, by means of simple semi-analytical models (SAMs), a relationship is found between the vertical force on the wheel, the tilt angle of the motorcycle and the remaining forces and moments acting at the wheel hub. Such relationships are nothing else than the standardized load spectra. Additionally, a simple and efficient method based on smart wheels for real-time structural monitoring is proposed. Standardized load spectra prove to provide consistent results even when compared to real-time structural monitoring data. By means of the presented smart wheels, advanced lightweight motorcycle construction is enabled by derivation of standardized load spectra or real time estimation of the damage of structural components.

The principle of remote parameter control(RPC) and test method of road simulator test are analyzed, and the road simulation test of motorcycle is implemented with road simulator produced by MTS company. Firstly, by disposing strain gauge and accelerometer, the load spectrum of motorcycle is sampled when the motorcycle runs on gravel road and concrete road with constant speed. Then using the front and rear axle acceleration as desired response signals, the simulation iteration and road simulation test are conducted. At last, the key problems of motorcycle road simulation test are solved. The result shows that the desired response signals and the monitor signals are well matched, and the road load spectrum of motorcyle is accurately reproduced.

The durability and riding comfort performance of a new type scooter were investigated by bench test. The longterm road load data of Taiwan market were measured with accelerometers and strain gauges by the on-line rainflow cycle counting method. The equivalent test track corresponding to 50,000 km in Taiwan market was established with ARTC's proving ground (Automotive Research and Testing Center in Taiwan) by correlation analysis technique. Then we performed the full vehicle bench durability test with load histories obtained by the road simulation technique. After a series of testing, analysis, and modification, the test vehicle already got a satisfactory result for the durability performance. Riding comfort analysis was performed following the ISO 2631 standard with accelerometers near the seat and foot in the bench testing. In order to get an optimum combination of suspension system for this new type scooter, many sets of front and rear suspensions were evaluated. The evaluation software of riding comfort was developed in accordance with ISO 2631 standard by using LabVIEW programming language. Finally, no cracks were observed when this scooter underwent a durability test on the public road more than 50,000 km. It means that above integrated approach was suitable to evaluate the durability and riding comfort performance of a new type vehicle.
