Evaluation methodology for light sources used to illuminate highly photosensitive artwork

Abstract: Spectral energy radiated by light sources is the primary source of colour damage in highly photosensitive artworks (HPAs). However, spectral power distributions differ for different light sources, and the absorption and reflection characteristics of different materials, when irradiated by each narrow spectral energy band, also differ. This could result in large differences in the degree of radiation damage for materials under the same lighting intensity. In this paper, the suitability of different light source… Show more

“…Therefore, to scientifically evaluate the effect of LEDs with different spectral compositions on the color preference of traditional Chinese paintings, an evaluation method based on SPD, which does not use the traditional indicators, such as CCT, Duv, and SDCM is urgently needed. In a study on illumination damage in traditional Chinese paintings based on the SPD of the light source, some scholars [ [23] , [24] , [25] , [26] , [27] , [28] , [29] , [30] ] have developed 10 kinds of narrowband light sources in different wavelengths covering the visible light spectrum using monochromatic LED chips. They then conducted long-period irradiation experiments on cultural relics, utilizing these various narrowband light sources as the experimental light sources.…”
