Evaluation of a Brief Web-Based Genetic Feedback Intervention for Reducing Alcohol-Related Health Risks Associated with ALDH2

Abstract: There is increasing interest in health interventions that incorporate genetic risk information. Although genetic feedback has been evaluated as an adjunct to smoking cessation interventions, its efficacy for reducing alcohol-related risks is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a web-based alcohol intervention incorporating genetic feedback and risk information specific to ALDH2 genotype. The ALDH2*2 variant is associated with partial protection aga… Show more

“…As a result, they show increased physiological responses to alcohol (e.g., facial flushing) following alcohol consumption. Individuals with the variant genes have an increased risk of esophageal cancer (Brooks et al, DOI: 10.3109/14659891.2012.709912 Alcohol problems among Asian American college students 15 2009; Hendershot et al, 2009). Hendershot et al (2010 found that a brief web-based genetic feedback intervention was effective in reducing 30-day drinking frequency and quantity among Asian American college students.…”

“…Three studies 34 35 40 assessed self reported alcohol use, with genetic risks communicated for cancers 34 40 and for cardiovascular disease. 35 Comparisons were between DNA based risk estimates versus no risk estimates.…”

“…While a small evidence base of trial data shows mixed results on whether genotype information can improve health behaviors including smoking, alcohol use, and diet Hendershot et al 2010;Marteau et al 2010;Grant et al 2013), few studies have focused specifically on young adults (Hendershot et al 2010). This target population will likely require compelling risk information to motivate behavior change during young adulthood.…”
