Evaluation of a Chemistry Concept Inventory for general chemistry students at Finnish university

Abstract: A chemistry concept inventory (Chemical Concept Inventory 3.0/CCI 3.0), previously developed for use in Norwegian universities, was tested and evaluated for use in a Finnish university setting. The test, designed to evaluate student knowledge and learning of chemistry concepts, was administered as both pre- and posttest in first year general chemistry courses at the University of Jyväskylä. The results were evaluated using different statistical tests, focusing both on individual item an… Show more

“…The CCI 3.0 has been statistically tested (Eggen et al, 2017) and used as both pre-test at the beginning of the semester and post-test after the teaching of the course in several chemistry courses at NTNU. A Finnish version of the concept inventory has been used at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland (Kiviniemi et al, 2018;Kiviniemi and Nuora, 2020). Please contact the corresponding author for access to the Norwegian version of CCI 3.0.…”

“…where X o and X i being the average assessment marks of the whole population and of those who answered correctly the specific question; P being the previously defined difficulty index and σ the standard deviation of the whole population (Kiviniemi et al, 2018). The values of the index are expected to lie above 0.2 with the distance from that limiting value being analogous to the discriminating ability of the question under consideration.…”
