Evaluation of a metofluthrin fan vaporizer device against phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a cutaneous leishmaniasis focus in the Judean Desert, Israel

Abstract: The OFF! Clip-On fan vaporizer device releasing metofluthrin was evaluated against phletobomine sand flies in the Judean Desert, Israel, in October, 2009. A total of 76,400 sand flies was collected, with male flies representing 98.3% Phlebotomus sergenti and 1.7% P. papatasi. Females comprised 43.0% of the total catch and included 6.7% blood-fed females. Similar proportions of flies were collected in both suction and sticky traps. In trials with unbaited suction traps, similar numbers of sand flies were collec… Show more

“…There are many commercially available spatial repellent products currently on the market. These products include impregnated plastic or paper strips (Argueta et al 2004;Kawada et al 2005Kawada et al , 2008, coils (Jensen et al 2000, Ogoma et al 2012, candles (Muller et al 2008), fan emanators (Zollner and Orshan 2011), and heat-generating devices (Alten et al 2003, Collier et al 2006. Although much interest exists regarding the efficacy of these products, very few scientific studies, especially in the field against natural populations of mosquitoes, have been conducted.…”

“…The sticky trap has been evaluated under field conditions with a variety of designs. For instance, sticky traps were evaluated with blue and yellow colors baited with synthetic sex pheromones (Bray et al 2010), host odor (Oshaghi et al 1994), CO 2 in horizontal position (Moncaz et al 2013), or with CO 2 paired with a metofluthrin (Zollner and Orshan 2011), and colored chemical light sticks (Burkett et al 2007), with and without lights (Veronesi et al 2007). Another method of capture is the delta trap, which is mainly used for economically important insects, usually combined with sex pheromones (Barrera et al 2006).…”

“…Whether this was because of a repellent or a killing effect was not known. The efficacy of metofluthrin as a repellent may also differ among species or families as it apparently has little or no effect against Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) (Zoller & Orshan, ). Recently, emanators that should be effective for longer than previous emanators have been developed.…”
