Evaluation of a New Catheter for Simultaneous Intracranial Pressure Monitoring and Cerebral Spinal Fluid Drainage: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Objectives: Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is a common practice when treating intracranial pathology with risk of elevated ICP. External ventricular drain (EVD) insertion is a standard approach for both monitoring ICP and draining cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, the conventional EVD cannot serve these two purposes simultaneously because it cannot accurately measure ICP and its pulsatile waveform while the EVD is open to CSF drainage. A new Integra ® Camino ® FLEX Ventricular Catheter (Integra Lifes… Show more

“…Such devices include double lumen ventricular cathethers—Liquoguard machines ® (Möller Medical GmbH & Co, Fulda, Germany) and Raumedic EVDs (Raumedic AG, Helmbrechts, Germany) [61,62,63]. Retrospective analysis comparing it against a conventional EVD demonstrated concordance in ICP values and waveforms [64].…”

“…These include the ventricular catheter, proximal connecting tube, proximal collecting system/three-way stopcock, connector tube to main EVD system, stopcock, adjustable EVD set, graduated burette for monitoring CSF flow, another stopcock, a connecting tube, and a collection bag [ 10 ]. Some devices have been modified to also measure intracranial pressure [ 11 ].…”
