Evaluation of a P300-Based Brain-Machine Interface for a Robotic Hand-Orthosis Control

Abstract: This work presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a P300-based brain-machine interface (BMI) developed to control a robotic hand-orthosis. The purpose of this system is to assist patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who cannot open and close their hands by themselves. The user of this interface can select one of six targets, which represent the flexion-extension of one finger independently or the movement of the five fingers simultaneously. We tested offline and online our BMI on ei… Show more

“…Different tests were made with the EEG data of 12 ALS patients and 16 healthy subjects to find these alterations. The data came from a 16 electrode-P300-based BCI system that was previously designed to aid ALS patients with communication with the outer world, such as moving a robotic hand orthosis [21].…”

“…Muscle movement loss is a common ALS symptom, hence deteriorating the original pathway for muscle movement; the objective of this BCI is to generate an alternative path for hand-muscles movement, as shown in Figure 1a. Instead of the brain moving the muscles of the hand, a WiFi-controlled hand orthosis forces the movement onto the hand [21]. For this test, subjects are comfortably seated in front of an LCD monitor in a silent room where only the testers and subject are present.…”

“…With this procedure we are avoiding bias toward the non-target class and balance the accuracy calculation. In addition, we calculated the significance levels of the model’s accuracies with a permutation test [ 61 ] where the null hypothesis indicates that the observations of both classes are interchangeable, therefore any random permutation of the class labels produces accuracies comparable to those obtained with the non-interchangeable data. The alternative hypothesis is accepted when the accuracy of the model is an extreme value in the empirical distribution constructed with m random permutations.…”
