Study of H2S Removal Capability from Simulated Biogas by Using Waste-Derived Adsorbent Materials

Three waste-derived adsorbent materials (wood-derived biochar, sludge-derived activated carbon and activated ash) were pre-activated at the laboratory scale to apply them for the removal of H2S from a biogas stream. The H2S removal capabilities of each material were measured by a mass spectrometer, to detect the H2S concentration after the adsorption in an ambient environment. The activated ash adsorbent has the highest removal capacity at 3.22 mgH2S g−1, while wood-derived biochar has slightly lower H2S removal capability (2.2 mgH2S g−1). The physicochemical properties of pristine and spent materials were characterized by the thermogravimetric analyzer, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and N2 adsorption and desorption. Wood-derived biochar is a highly porous material that adsorbs H2S by physical adsorption of the mesoporous structure. Activated ash is a non-porous material which adsorbs H2S by the reaction between the alkaline compositions and H2S. This study shows the great potential to apply waste-derived adsorbent materials to purify a biogas stream by removing H2S.

This review showcases a comprehensive analysis of studies that highlight the different conversion procedures attempted across the globe. The resources of biogas production along with treatment methods are presented. The effect of different governing parameters like feedstock types, pretreatment approaches, process development, and yield to enhance the biogas productivity is highlighted. Biogas applications, for example, in heating, electricity production, and transportation with their global share based on national and international statistics are emphasized. Reviewing the world research progress in the past 10 years shows an increase of ~ 90% in biogas industry (120 GW in 2019 compared to 65 GW in 2010). Europe (e.g., in 2017) contributed to over 70% of the world biogas generation representing 64 TWh. Finally, different regulations that manage the biogas market are presented. Management of biogas market includes the processes of exploration, production, treatment, and environmental impact assessment, till the marketing and safe disposal of wastes associated with biogas handling. A brief overview of some safety rules and proposed policy based on the world regulations is provided. The effect of these regulations and policies on marketing and promoting biogas is highlighted for different countries. The results from such studies show that Europe has the highest promotion rate, while nowadays in China and India the consumption rate is maximum as a result of applying up-to-date policies and procedures.

Internal dry reforming (IDR) of methane for biogas‐fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications has been experimentally investigated on planar Ni‐GDC (cermet anode) electrolyte‐supported cells. This study focuses on the effect of CO2 concentration, current density, operating temperature, and residence time on internal methane dry reforming. A single cell is fed with different CH4/CO2 mixture ratios between 0.6 and 1.5. Extra CO2 recovered from carbon capture plants can be utilized here as a reforming agent. The I‐V characterization curves are recorded at different operating conditions in order to determine the best electrochemical performance while the power production is maximized, and carbon deposition is suppressed. The outlet gas from the anode is analyzed by a micro gas chromatograph to investigate methane conversion inside the anode fuel channel and to understand its influence on the cell performance. Relatively long‐term experiments have been performed for all gas mixtures at 850°C under a current density of 2000 A m−2. The results indicate that when the cell is fed with biogas with an equimolar amount of CH4 and CO2, carbon deposition is prevented, and maximum power density is obtained.
