<div> Biogas production through anaerobic co-digestion of a mixture of cattle manure and citrus waste using an experimental facility for testing the biochemical methane potential (BMP) was investigated. No buffer solution is added to the mixture in order to use the buffer capacity from cattle manure. Regular measurements of pH, alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand, methane and biogas net production were performed. Three substrate inoculum ratios (SIR) 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 (g COD/g VSS) were evaluated. Maximum COD removals of 56.4 %, 51.3 % and 48.0 % for the SIRs 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were obtained. For all SIR, pH was on the range of 6.5 to 7.5, while the maximum VFA concentration was 4250 mg CH3COOH l-1. Alkalinity ranged between 2250 to 4500 mg CaCO3 l-1. Both maximum methane production rate (MMPR) and percentage of anaerobic biodegradability were established. BMP of 94.3 to 146.6 mLSTP-CH4/gVSS were calculated for the ratios 1:1 and 3:1, respectively. The highest feasibility for biogas production and methane was established for SIR 3:1. </div>

Ester-based organic compounds are one type of synthetic base fluid added to drilling mud used during off-shore oil-drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Concern over the environmental impact of synthetic base fluid (SBF) contaminated rock cuttings discharged into the Gulf of Mexico has prompted the promulgation of EPA regulations requiring that all SBF be tested for biodegradability in marine sediment prior to their use in the Gulf. In order to allow the design or selection of suitably biodegradable esters, the anaerobic biodegradability of a variety of ester compounds was tested using a marine sediment inoculum to reveal the effect of: (a) increasing the chain length of the acid moiety, (b) increasing the chain length of the alcohol moiety; (c) alternating the relative size of the alcohol and acid moieties, (d) branching in the alcohol moiety, and (e) the presence of an unsaturated bond in the acidic moiety. The chemical structure of esters was found to affect the completeness and rate of anaerobic biodegradation, and would affect their ability to be certified for use as an SBF in the Gulf of Mexico. Recommendations for ester usage include using esters that have a total carbon number of between 12 and 18 and avoiding the use of branched alcohols (or acids by inference). The presence of an unsaturated bond in the acid (or alcohol by inference) increased biodegradability of the ester.

Bioremediation options encompass diverse types of biochemical mechanisms that may lead to a target's mineralization, partial transformation, humification, or altered redox state (e.g. for metallic elements). Because these various mechanisms produce alternative fates of the targeted pollutants, it is often necessary to use diverse evaluation criteria to qualify a successful bioremediation. Too often target depletion from a treated matrix can be mistakenly ascribed to biological activity when in fact the depletion is caused by abiotic losses (e.g. volatilization, leaching, and stripping). Thus, effective, and therefore convincing, evaluation requires that experimental and engineering designs anticipate all possible routes of target depletion and that these routes be carefully monitored.
