Evaluation of a web-based app to assist home-hazard modification in falls prevention

FallCheck is a web app that supports identification of home-hazards and directs users towards self-management strategies to reduce risk of falling. “…The findings of this study highlight the pressing need of developing apps to address these areas of concern. Supporting this aim, many researchers have started to develop and test apps to assist in home-hazard modification in falls prevention (Ward, Walker-Clarke, & Holliday, 2017) and to help older adults self-assess and monitor their individual fall risk (Rasche et al, 2017). By supporting persons living with dementia and their family caregivers in these safety-related needs, it can reduce the risk of incidents which can ultimately improve outcomes for the dyad.…”

“…For the trial, participants were asked to use FallCheck over a two-week period, at least once or more, after which, the researcher sent a link to the survey (hosted via Online Surveys – Jisc, 2018). The survey was adapted from the 30-point USE Questionnaire, developed to assess Usefulness, Satisfaction and Ease of Use of consumer interfaces – metrics of user experience associated with acquisition and use decisions, and usability (Lund, 2001; ISO 9241, 2010) and used in a previous evaluation of the Web-app with health and social care professionals (Ward et al , 2017). Participants were asked to rate their agreement with statements in a Likert style questionnaire, from ‘Strongly Disagree’ to ‘Strongly Agree’ (Likert, 1932).…”

“…FallCheck is suitable for any Web-enabled device and can be downloaded from www.coventry.ac.uk/fallcheck. Testing of a beta version of FallCheck by health and social care professionals found good acceptability for use in practice or as a digital self-assessment tool by people at risk of falls, which may support environmental and behavioural change to reduce fall risk at home (Ward et al , 2017).…”
