Evaluation of an instrumented glove for hand-movement acquisition

Abstract: Abstract-Quantitative assessment of digit range of motion (ROM) is often needed for monitoring effectiveness of rehabilitative treatments and assessing patients' functional impairment. The objective of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using the Humanware Humanglove, a 20-position sensors glove, to measure fingers' ROM, with particular regard to measurement repeatability. With this aim, we performed a series of tests on six normal subjects. Data analysis was based on statistical parameters an… Show more

“…Based on these exercises, the therapist looks for data related to grip and pinch strength, joint range of motion, and functional abilities (Dipietro L. et al, 2003). Their assessment provides key-information for diagnosis, rehabilitation program and treatment progress analysis.…”

“…Furthermore, such technique does not enable a simultaneous measurements of the entire had range of motion. As a result, the therapist takes a significant amount of time to perform all the required measurements that end up to have associated errors (Dipietro L. et al, 2003).…”

“…The monitoring of the user capability is useful for determining the diagnostic information. The plan for the rehabilitation could be also based on evaluation result (Dipietro, L. 2003). Thus, it is necessary to have a set of quantitative criteria, a therapy methodology and common tools to be applied by the occupational therapist.…”

“…Bend sensors [2] and piezoresistive sensors [3,4] have been already used for the previously mentioned applications and their properties have been analyzed. Nevertheless no particular attention was paid to their mechanical characterization, so we added some improvements in order to fill this gap.…”
