Evaluation of anal sphincter resistance and distensibility in healthy controls using EndoFLIP ©

Abstract: This distensibility technique provides an important new way of studying the anal canal and hence may have a role in testing sphincter competence in patients with disorders.

“…14 Similar results were reported by Alqudah et al 37 In a study by Gourcerol et al 38 comparing the use of EndoFLIP and 3-dimensional high-resolution manometry, it was found that anal distensibility index was higher at rest and during voluntary contraction in fecal incontinence than in healthy subjects, and that the discrimination was better using the distensibility index as compared with the anal pressure. EndoFLIP may be used intra-operatively to assess the anal sphincter geometry and tightness during repair or augmentation.…”

“…An additional study on volunteers showed a higher opening pressure for women than for men [55]. This suggests a different distensibility in men and women, but the findings were not consistent with earlier manometric findings.…”

“…So far, only four studies have been published [54][55][56][57]. In vitro tests have shown FLIP distensibility measurements to have great validity and reproducibility [54].…”

“…The measurement of the corresponding intra‐bag pressure makes it possible to assess the CSA pressure response (distensibility) of the organ . The EndoFLIP ® was originally designed to study dynamic wall properties at the gastro‐esophageal junction and has also been used to assess the distensibility of the anal canal in healthy volunteers . Two preliminary studies using the EndoFLIP ® have reported increased anal distensibility in small populations of FI patients .…”
