Evaluation of Anti-inflammatory and Anti-diarrhoeal Activity of Leaf Aqueous Extracts of Zizyphus Lotus (L) in Albino Wistar Rats

Abstract: The present study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical screening, the acute toxicity, in vivo anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrheal activities of the Zizyphus lotus (Z lotus) leaf’s aqueous extract. The extract was subjected to phytochemical analysis, acute toxicity study, anti-inflammatory evaluation using carrageenan induced paw edema and the anti-diarrheal activity was assessed by the castor oil induced diarrhea inhibition method in laboratory rats. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the … Show more

“…Among these substances, polyphenols from jujube, secondary metabolites of plants, are important determinants of the nutritional and organoleptic qualities of Zizyphus lotus [21,22]. Several bioactive compounds extracted from jujubes have attracted the attention of many researchers due to their important biological actions, including antioxidant [19,23], enzyme inhibitory [24,25], antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects [24,26], anti-inflammatory, and other effects [27][28][29], which can be used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industry.…”

“…Both plants are popularly known in Algeria and the most used in the treatment of various pathologies. Previous studies have demonstrated the antidiarrheal effects of Z. lotus and R. chalepensis (Hani et al 2020;Degu et al 2020). Zazouli et al (2022) and Letaief et al (2021) have determined an important antiproliferative activity of Z. lotus extract against cancer cell lines, in addition of an interesting antimicrobial activity.…”

“…This plant belongs to the Rhamnaceae family [30][31][32]. Several sections of ZL plant are widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many diseases, human nutrition and healthpromotion [33]. Numerous scientific reports have indicated that this plant contains significant amounts of glutamic acid, sterols, vitamins, fibers, amino acids, triacylglycerol, mineral matter and antioxidant compounds [34][35][36].…”
