Experimental AnimalsWistar rats (150-200 g) and Swiss Albino mice (20-25 g) of either sex were purchased from the National Toxicology Center, Pune. They were housed in groups of five under standard laboratory conditions of temperature (25 ± 2°C) and 12 h lightdark cycle. Animals were provided standard pellet diet (Amrut Laboratory animal feed, Sangli-Maharashtra) and water ad libitum. The distribution of animals in the groups, the sequence of trials and the treatment allotted to each group were randomized throughout the experiment. Laboratory animal handling and experimental procedures were performed in accordance with the guidelines of CPCSEA, and the experimental protocol was approved by Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (198/99/CPCSEA).Background: The seeds of Dolichos biflorus (DB) have been traditionally used in the treatment of cough and asthma. Aim: Based on the traditional claim, the present study was planned to evaluate the anti-allergic and anti-anaphylactic activities of DB. Materials and Methods: The ethanolic extract of the seeds of DB was prepared by cold maceration process. DB was subjected to phytochemical screening, acute toxicity studies, mast cell-stabilizing activity using compound 48/80 and anti-allergic activity using milk-induced leukocytosis and eosinophilia and passive paw anaphylaxis. Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis was done by using one-way analysis of variance followed by Dunnett's test. Results: The phytochemical investigation showed presence of proteins, flavonoids and glycosides. DB extract inhibited milk-induced leukocytosis and eosinophilia and also the compound 48/80 induced mast cell degranulation. DB extract significantly reduced passive paw anaphylaxis in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion:The results demonstrated that DB extract possesses anti-allergic and anti-anaphylactic potentials that might be useful in the management of asthma.

Background: Cultural and religious practices of African origin have decisively influenced traditional health practices in the Americas since the African diaspora. Plants are core elements in the religions of African origin. Compared with other parts of Brazil where the Afro-Brazilian presence is widely recognized, in Southern Brazil, these cultural practices are often socially invisible. Yet, there are several terreiros of three Afro-Brazilian religions: Candomblé, Umbanda, and Ritual deAlmas e Angola. We hypothesize that the importance of plants in Afro-Brazilian religions is linked not only to spiritual and magical issues but also to the medicinal properties of these plants. We seek to answer the following questions: (a) Which plants are used in the terreiros and what are their indications for use?; (b) Are there plants that stand out culturally in these religious groups?; and (c) What is the importance of the adaptive maintenance and replacement process in the use of plants in these religions, considering the Neotropical and African plants? Methods: We performed a census of the existing terreiros on the Island of Santa Catarina to collect information on the knowledge and use of plants. In all terreiros that consented to participate in the research, we collected data through semi-structured interviews, guided tours for plant collection, and participant observation. We identified the botanical species through expert consultations and botanical literature. Results: We interviewed 27 spiritual leaders, who cited 93 plants belonging to 86 botanical species. We identified 14 categories of use, with emphasis on liturgical ritual use (59%), general and unspecified diseases (32%), and digestive diseases (27%). In most liturgics uses, direct contact between plant and patient occurs, as in the case of bathing and the cleansing use of smoke. Sixteen plants were cited in all terreiros, configuring a set of species that can be considered as culturally important plants for these religious groups. Conclusions: These groups have extensive knowledge about a highly consensual set of therapeutic plants that should be further investigated pharmacologically to understand the effect of their external use. Also, we emphasize the importance of recognizing and valuing this ancestral Afro-Brazilian knowledge and learning also from these people about their broader vision of health which also adds more spirituality in health care.

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) represents a common and serious health problem in pediatric age group in term of outpatient visit. The chronic nature of disease and its association with other comorbid conditions like asthma, eczema etc. has shown significant negative impact on quality of life, school performance and cognitive functioning in children which has influenced many parents to seek alternative therapies. Moreover there is a growing concern of long term use of dose related side effects of corticosteroids, antihistaminic etc. Considering etiopatho genesis of AR, Ayurvedic herbal drugs possessing properties of antihistaminic, mast cell stabilizer and immunomodulators, alone or in combination can show positive effects in relieving the symptoms of AR. Thus in this review paper, an attempt has been made in this direction to prepare a comprehensive list of herbal drugs with above aforementioned properties that can help in the management of AR in pediatric age group with better clinical efficacy and safety profile.
