Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity and Phytochemical Screening of Leaves, Barks, Stems and Fruits of Alphitonia philippinensis (Rhamnaceae) From Brunei Darussalam

Abstract: Alphitonia, a genus of the Rhamnaceae family with, approximately 20 species, are available in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Polynesia and Oceania. 15,16 This genus is mainly used in traditional medicine by the inhabitants of Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, Vanuatu, Tonga, Northern Australia and Brunei Darussalam for coughs, constipation, headaches, stomachaches, menstrual pain, prolapsed rectum after postpartum woman, facilitate childbirth, swelling, fever, earache, cancer, skin diseases (eczema, ecthyma, pityr… Show more

“…Ginkgo biloba extract showed positive correlations (R = 0.614) between TFC to FRAP activity ( Sati et al, 2013 ) and Morinda citrifolia extract (R = 0.810) between TFC to ABTS activity ( Thoo et al, 2010 ). Meanwhile, a high positive correlation was observed between TPC and FRAP (R = 0.881) and it was in line with a previous study in Alphitonia philippinensis extract ( Ahmed et al, 2019 ). A high positive correlation indicated a high amount of TPC and TFC contributed to high FRAP value, thus a better antioxidant potential, suggesting that TPC and TFC plays a role in reducing ferric iron (Fe 3+ ) to ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ).…”

“…Flavonoids are a class of polyphenols that are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom and in all parts of higher plants (Benchaachoua et al, 2018). They have a specific structure that includes the positions of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups as well as a double bond, which results in flavone and flavonol derivatives (Ahmed et al, 2019). In this study, the contents of total flavonoids, flavones, and flavonols were predominantly higher in the leaves extract than in the bark extract.…”

“…These results are confirmed by Ben Ammar et al (2007) and Kosalec et al (2013), who had found flavonoid concentrations of 283 mg QE/g and 33.6 mg QE/g, respectively, in methanolic leaves and bark extracts. This can be explained by the difference in the distribution of flavonoids during plant development and because flavones and flavonols are mainly concentrated in the plant's leaves due to their high exposure to sunlight (Benchaachoua et al, 2018;Ahmed et al, 2019).…”

“…PTZ originally acts as an antagonist on GABA receptor. Owing to presence of miscellaneous bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, phenols and saponins in Zizyphus spina christi (14,15) , it was disclosed that its extract possess diverse pharmacological effects against the brain disorders such as anti-anxiety effect (5) , attenuation of memory impairment induced via scopolamine (16) , and neuroprotection against cerebral ischemia (6) . The present work found that the effects of pretreatment with crude extract exhibited a remarkable gephyrin expression in brain tissues similar to those of diazepam group as compared to those of PTZ-kindled mice.…”
