EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF Opuntia ficus-indica, SEEDS AND PEELS EXTRACTS

Abstract: The biologically active compounds isolated from plants are known to be efficient as antibacterial and antioxidants. The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of total phenols and flavonoids drived from the petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Opuntia ficus-indica seeds and peels were performed using DPPH and modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative bacteria (Serratia marcescens), respectively. In the present study, i… Show more

“…However, the PPS has more fiber than the PPP, and wheat flour has 82% fiber. These findings are consistent with those of El-Shahat et al, (2019), Abdelfattah et al, (2020), Ali et al, (2020), andFiad et al, (2020). Table 1 also displays total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity of PPP, PPS, and WF.…”

“…Opuntia peels are usually discarded after fruit consumption. However, there are no adequate studies on the peels, although they contain a diversity of signi cant amounts of bioactive constituents with various biological activities [10]. A recent study investigated the prophylactic effect O. cus-indica petroleum ether peel extract against irradiation-induced colitis in rats.…”

“…Opuntia species have been used in traditional medicine to treat chronic diseases, particularly diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease (Santos-Díaz et al, 2017), rheumatism, asthma, hypercholesterolemia, andhypertension (Osuna-Martınez et al, 2014). The plant has other biological activities including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, hypocholesterolemic, and anti-aging activities (Benayad et al, 2014;Ammar et al, 2015;Barba et al, 2017;Fiad et al, 2020;Izuegbuna et al, 2019), these biological activities are due to the high level of active compounds such as polyphenols, vitamins (Belhadj Slimene et al, 2020), polyunsaturated fatty acids and amino acids (Al-Mustafa et al, 2014). Research by Andreu-Coll et al (2020) and Khaled et al (2020) shows that the seeds contain the highest concentration of bioactive compounds such as catechins, epicatechin, and ferulic acid.…”
