Evaluation of Antiulcer Potential of <i>Bougainvillea spectabilis</i> Extracts on Cysteamine Hydrochloride-Induced Duodenal Ulceration in Rats

Abstract

Objective: The plant Bougainvillea spectabilis is traditionally used as anti bacterial, anticancer, anti diabetic, anti fertility, anti- fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti hyperlipidemic, anti oxidant, antiulcer, antiviral, hepato-protective, and thrombolytic activities. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of Bougainvillea spectabilis (ethanolic and aqueous extract p.o.) on duodenal ulceration. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on the duodenal ulceration model by using Cysteamine hydrochloride. Ranitidine (20 mg/kg) was used as standard drug. Then the aqueous and ethanolic extract (200 mg/kg) of the plant is used as the treatment group, which is compared against the potent duodenal ulcer causing agent Cysteamine hydrochloride. Results: Both the extracts of the plant Bougainvillea spectabilis showed potent duodenal ulcer healing effect in Cysteamine induced duodenal ulceration. The ethanolic extract of the plant Bougainvillea spectabilis showed more potent activity than aqueous extract. Conclusion: The plant Bougainvillea spectabilis increased healing of gastric ulceration and prevented the development of experimentally induced duodenal ulceration in rats.
