Evaluation of Asymptomatic Malaria Status in Eastern of Afghanistan Using High Resolution Melting Analysis

Abstract: Background: Malaria is threatening more than half of Afghanistan population. Asymptomatic malaria is notable problem against malaria controlling strategies. In this study we evaluated the asymptomatic malaria status in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan in 2017. Methods: Overall, 296 finger blood samples were taken on DNA Banking Cards and microscopic slides from asymptomatic individuals in Jalalabad city. We used a novel post real time PCR high resolution melting analysis beside microscopy and semi-nested … Show more

“…Besides, melting curve alteration in HRM method discriminated Iranian Leishmania parasites of L. major , L. tropica and mixed infection in the study of Ghafari SM et al 34 . In addition, Mosawi SH et al, on asymptomatic malaria status in eastern Afghanistan, could distinguish P. vivax , P. falciparum , and mixed infections using high-resolution melting analysis 35 . The differentiation of Mitragyna speciosa from allied Mitragyna species was performed using DNA barcoding‑high‑resolution melting analysis by Chayapol Tungphatthong et al 36 .…”

“…Malaria is a common endemic disease in Afghanistan threatening about half of the Afghan population. Incidence has increased in recent years, especially in the Eastern regions [ 42 ]. In recent decades, the numbers of malaria cases has sharply increased in Afghanistan and—as with leishmaniasis—many outbreaks of the disease have been recorded [ 43 ].…”

“…Afghanistan is another highly malaria-endemic country, where approximately half of the population is at risk of infection [ 78 ]. The incidence of malaria in Afghanistan exceeded 200,000 cases in 2013, with 1783 deaths [ 7 ].…”

“…The latest WHO report projected nearly 400,000 malaria cases in Afghanistan in 2019 [ 4 ]. A study of malaria prevalence in Jalalabad City, employing real-time PCR with high resolution melting analysis on 296 blood samples reported asymptomatic malaria in 26 (7.8%) individuals [ 78 ]. Most of the imported malaria cases in Iran in one study originated from Afghanistan [ 62 ].…”
