Evaluation of bleach-sedimentation for sterilising and concentrating Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum specimens

Abstract: BackgroundBleach-sedimentation may improve microscopy for diagnosing tuberculosis by sterilising sputum and concentrating Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We studied gravity bleach-sedimentation effects on safety, sensitivity, speed and reliability of smear-microscopy.MethodsThis blinded, controlled study used sputum specimens (n = 72) from tuberculosis patients. Bleach concentrations and exposure times required to sterilise sputum (n = 31) were determined. In the light of these results, the performance of 5 gravit… Show more

“…On the other hand, the SNARC effect clearly shows associations with lateralized response tendencies. If they appear late in the process, it is likely that they are spatial in nature, as in the mental number line account of the SNARC effect ( Restle, 1970 ; Dehaene et al, 1990 ) rather than conceptual, as in the polarity account ( Proctor and Cho, 2006 ). Our conclusions, therefore, are similar to those of Fitousi et al (2009) .…”

“…Its concentration also varies according to the time and the specimens used [ 6 ]. M. tuberculosis in sputum was successfully sterilized by adding equal volumes of 15% bleach for one minute, 6% for five minutes or 3% for 20 minutes [ 15 ]. Studies revealed that the concentration of bleach and time applied to decontaminate biohazard spill varied from 0.05%-0.5% for 15-20 min [ 16 , 17 ].…”

“…Traditionally, researchers have used the mental number line to explain both CDE and PDE (e.g., Restle, 1970; Dehaene, 1997). According to this perspective, numbers are represented in the brain along a line analogous to the physical number line on paper.…”
