Evaluation of Bonsmara and Belmont Red cattle breeds in South Africa. 1. Productive performance

Abstract: The productive performance of progeny by Bonsmara and Belmont Red sires was compared in contemporarily reared groups in South Africa. Measurements on 4279 pedigreed progeny of 96 Bonsmara sires and 18 Belmont Red sires were recorded over 15 years in 4 diverse climatic regions of South Africa. Growth traits were measured on growing stock from birth to 18 months at pasture. Weight gain, feed conversion rate, frame size, scrotal circumference and visually assessed ‘functional efficiency’ scores were recorded on m… Show more

“…For the post-weaning dataset estimates of phenotypic correlations were negative between IBK and weight measurements, ranging from −0.42 ± 0.04 to -0.53 ± 0.03, except between IBK and BWT (0.10 ± 0.05) (Table 4). In general, calves with IBK appear to have a lower weight, which is consistent with previous studies [33]. …”

“…The average age of the animals ranged from 864 to 964 days in the different data sets. Corbet et al (2006) analysed tick count data from animals that had a narrower age range than considered in the current study (i.e. from 360 to 2 920 days).…”

“…Animal Science Complex (Texas A&M University, College Station, TX), and the Beef Systems Research Center (Texas A&M University) to measure performance, feed effi ciency, and breeding soundness traits in growing bulls. Bonsmara is a subtropically adapted Bos taurus composite composed of approximately 60% Afrikaner and 20% each of Hereford and Shorthorn breeds (Corbet et al, 2006). The Bonsmara bulls located at the McGregor Research Center (Trial 1) and Angus bulls at the O. D. Butler Jr.…”
