Evaluation of Canadian Prairie-Grown Hybrid Poplar for High Value Solid Wood Products

Abstract: Studies were carried out to evaluate the suitability of Canadian prairie-grown, short-rotation hybrid poplar for the manufacture of high value solid wood products, including appearance grade lumber, plywood, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and oriented strandboard (OSB). For appearance grade lumber applications, hybrid poplar was found to be an attractive wood as it machined and finished well. This wood can be finished to take on a number of different looks or to resemble other species. Hybrid poplar would appea… Show more

“…Work with plantation-grown hybrid poplars has shown the potential to produce lumber suitable for appearance grade applications when prairie-grown (Knudson and Brunette 2015). Other species-specific work includes research by Clement et al (2004) that analyzed the component part distributions possible from sawing lumber from short-length white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.)…”

“…However, it has been noted that in recent years hardwoods in general (Schuler et al 2001) as well as specific hardwood species such as poplar and hybrids (Balatinecz et al 2001, Knudson andBrunette 2015) have realized increased utilization opportunities in the manufacture of various engineered wood products. Furthermore, low-grade hardwoods have long been used in the manufacture of pulp and paper.…”

“…Investigations by Shukla and Kamden (2008) prove that low-density wood such as silver maple, yellow poplar and aspen can also be effectively applied in the production of LVL. According to Knudson and Brunette (2015) yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) as well as red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) which are used in the production of interior design elements can be substituted by hybrid Walker poplar (P. deltoides P. petrowskyana) which is characterized by low density, similar to that of aspen, i.e.…”

“…Beyond traditional products, such furniture parts, picture frames, interior mouldings, venetian blinds, chopsticks, kitchenware, toys and pallets, over the last years hybrid poplar has been successfully used in the building sector, where lightweight wooden constructions increase the market share thanks to prefabrication and their great acoustic and thermal insulation performance . In particular, hybrid poplar has been used for outdoor applications such as veneers (Knudson and Brunette 2015) and WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) exterior decking (Fabiyi and McDonald 2010). In these cases, a comprehensive knowledge concerning the effect of weathering on material properties and the chemical modifications that can be applied in order to reduce wood degradation drawbacks assumes significant importance.…”
