Evaluation of certain pomological and phenological traits of selected asian pear varieties growing in Middle European conditions

Abstract: The cultivation and breeding of new pear tree varieties have great potential, especially with the changing climate. The introduction of genetic resources and varieties from regions with a high genetic diversity can have a positive effect on the cultivation of pear trees in our region. In this experiment, a total of 23 Asian pear varieties originating from Japan and China were assessed. Based on the values obtained, the varieties were sorted, and suitable varieties for the conditions of the Czech Republic were … Show more

“…The date of full bloom varied for 2017-2018 from 26 th of March to 25 th of April in several Asian pear cultivars grown in Central Anatolia, Turkey (Pirlak and Mahmut, 2018). These dates are like the dates in the study of Nečas et al (2020), who evaluated pears in the same orchard as was evaluated in this study in years between 2012 and 2016, the average flowering date in these years varied from 5 th of April ('Hood') to 21 st of April ('Talgarskaja krasavica' and 'Kirgizskaja zimnaja'). 'Wu Jiu Xiang' flowered on 12 th , 'Jing Hua' on 11 th and 'Zao Su Li' on 13 th of April.…”

“…A very interesting criterion is fruit loss as a result of transpiration and respiration during cold storage. Since pears have less wax bloom than apples or stone fruits, they lose water during storage much more easily [48,49]. This is especially the case when pears are harvested too early.…”

“…China produces more Asian pears than any other country in the world, and the 'Yali' cultivar (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehder) is one of the main cultivars with an annual production of around 2.6 million tonnes [2,3]. The introduction of genetic resources and cultivars from regions with high genetic diversity can have a positive effect on fruit growing, especially in the context of a changing climate [4].…”
