Evaluation of choroidal lesions with swept-source optical coherence tomography

Abstract: SS-OCT is useful in imaging most choroidal melanocytic lesions. Image quality is best when the choroidal lesion is closer to the fovea, has a smaller diameter and a lighter choroidal pigmentation.

“…Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) provides greater tissue depth resolution using a 1,050 nm wavelength laser source and has been shown to enhance imaging of the choroido-scleral interface [11]. Morphological features of choroidal melanocytic lesions can be evaluated in more detail with SS-OCT than EDI-OCT; however, thickness measurements compared to US measurements have not been robustly studied [12, 13]. In the future, SS-OCT may become more widespread, warranting further study of this modality in evaluating choroidal melanocytic tumours in relation to the MOLES thickness score.…”

“…The Swept Source OCT device (SS-OCT) from Zeiss (Plex Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) is capable of capturing the mid-peripheral retinal structures with an optical resolution of approx. 6 µm (digital 2 µm) (100,000 A-scans per second); however, it is still not able to depict the outer periphery of the retina due to the scan geometry [36].…”

“…Das Swept-Source-OCT-Gerät (SS-OCT) der Firma Zeiss (Plex Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) ist in der Lage, die retinalen Strukturen der mittleren Peripherie bei einer optischen Auflösung von ca. 6 µm (digital 2 µm) zu erreichen (100 000 A-Scans/s); die äußere Netzhautperipherie allerdings ist auch hier aufgrund der Scangeometrie nicht darstellbar [36].…”

“…In particular, this method can show whether the choroidal melanoma surface is regular and lobular ( 43 ), whether it exhibits normal retinal thickness and a complete photoreceptor cell layer, and whether extensive retinal detachment and “debris” are present in the dorsal retina ( 19 ). Swept-source OCT can show fine details of the choroid near the fovea and posterior pole ( 44 ). Furthermore spectral domain OCT can help to observe lesions in the pigment epithelium ( 45 ).…”
