Evaluation of Compact Tomato Cultivars for Container Gardening Indoors and under Sunlight

Abstract: Numerous compact tomato cultivars are available for home gardening. However, evaluations under different environmental conditions are limited. The aim of this study was to characterize the growth and productivity of 20 compact tomato cultivars grown indoors under environmental conditions that resembled a residential space (11 mol·m−2·d−1 of white light, constant 22 °C, and moderate relative humidity) or in a greenhouse with sunlight only. Plants in the greenhouse were generally larger and yielded more fruit th… Show more

“…However, this observation does not correspond with the data collected based on the subjective visual scale used in our study. Given the large variability observed in intumescence among cultivars grown in this and other studies conducted by our group [11], we believe that rating scales should be adjusted to enable the proper characterization and quantification of various symptoms. For example, intumescence injury in tomatoes can include canker-like lesions on stems and the adaxial and abaxial surface of leaves, leaf-edge discoloration, and partial or complete leaf abscission (Figure 1).…”

“…However, providing higher DLIs to achieve compact growth might not be a suitable approach for most growers unless significant increases in yield can be achieved, considering the high energy costs of providing sole-source lighting. Selecting cultivars that are compact and high yielding is a more suitable strategy for the commercial industry compared to producing plants under higher DLIs [11,14]. Using LED fixtures with high red:far-red ratios could also help maintain plants compact [42].…”

“…Among indoor crops, tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the top crops because of its remarkable nutritional and commercial aspects [ [59] , [60] , [61] ]. Regarding the volatile profile, tomato plants have been investigated under conventional and stressed conditions to determine BVOC variations between constitutive and induced emissions [ 62 , 63 ].…”
