Evaluation of Corrosive Behavior of Zinc Composite Coating on Mild Steel for Marine Applications

Abstract: Mild Steel has various forms in which it can be used. It possesses mechanical properties and hence it has found various implementations in many sectors / industries. However, the downside of using mild steel is that it has a high susceptibility to corrosion. There are numerous techniques for protection of mild steel but Zinc electrodeposition techniques is the most preferred method for producing a suitable film coating for the appropriate protection of mild steel. The effect of deposition potential, current, b… Show more

“…The Zn-nano SiO2 platings were electrodeposited with cathodic current density varying from 1.5 to 3.5 A/dm 2 . Plating time at each current density was calculated so that the total electrical charge of the platings was equivalent, and the platings had thickness of 12 µm.…”

“…However, the corrosion resistance of steel is poor, so that many protection methods have been developed to increase the corrosion resistance of steel, [1] in which a thin layer of zinc plated on steel is widely used. [2,3] Zinc has a standard potential of -0.76 V/SHE which is more negative than iron (Fe/Fe 2+ : -0.44 V/SHE). Therefore, it is used for cathodic protection of steel as a sacrificial anode against steel corrosion.…”
