Psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Cultural Competence Scale in Clinical Nurses

Aim Cultural competence is a crucial component of nursing competency, and a valid and reliable scale is needed to measure it. This study was conducted to investigate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Cultural Competence Scale among Iranian clinical nurses. Design A methodological design was used. Methods The scale was translated into Persian, and its content, face and construct validity, and reliability were examined. Results Two items with a content validity ratio of 0.6 were removed. In the case of the content validity index, one item with a content validity index lower than 0.70 was removed. The mean content validity index for the scale was reported as 0.99. All 31 items with an impact score index higher than 1.5 were approved. The exploratory factor analysis revealed four factors explaining 59.92% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha and the intraclass correlation coefficient were calculated at 0.95 and 0.94, respectively.

Objectives This study aimed to determine the relationship between cultural intelligence and cultural competence (CC) of the school of nursing and midwifery students from the Zanjan University of Medical Sciences in 2020-2021. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 245 from 600 nursing and midwifery students of the Zanjan University of Medical Sciences from November 24, 2020, to March 18, 2021. Data were collected using three questionnaires of demographic information, Cultural Intelligence Scale, and The Nurse Cultural Competence Scale. Data analysis was done through Pearson's test and the logistic regression model using SPSS Version 22. Results The response rate was 40.83%. The results showed that the total score of cultural intelligence had a strong positive relationship with CC ( r = 0.88). Also, the logistic regression model showed that the cultural intelligence variable could predict nursing and midwifery students’ CC (B = 0.1, P = .013). Conclusion It is recommended to pay more attention to increasing the cultural intelligence and CC of nursing and midwifery students.

Background and Purpose:Cultural competence in clinical nurses can lead to comprehensive care for patients from different cultures. Currently, an appropriate instrument to assess cultural competence in clinical nurses is limited. This study aimed to design and determine the psychometric properties of the clinical nursing cultural competence scale (CNCCS).Methods:This methodological study was conducted in 2018–2019 in two phases. In the first phase, a literature review and semistructured interviews with 18 clinical nurses from Isfahan and Ahvaz were conducted, and the results were used for item generation. In the second phase, the face, content, construct validity, and reliability of the questionnaire were assessed. For construct validity assessment through exploratory factor analysis (EFA), 200 clinical nurses were purposefully recruited to fill out CNCCS.Results:In the first phase, 140 items were produced. In the second phase, the item number was reduced to 40 after the face and content validity assessment. In EFA for construct validity assessment, 13 more items were deleted, and the remaining 27 items were loaded on six factors. The Cronbach’s alpha and the test–retest intraclass correlation coefficient were CNCCS 0.86 and 0.93, respectively.Conclusions:The CNCCS had acceptable psychometric characteristics in Iranian nurses and can be used for assessing cultural competence among clinical nurses. The use of this scale can help nursing policymakers and managers develop their understanding of nursing cultural competence and develop strategies for its improvement.
