Evaluation of dental implant insertion torque using a manual ratchet

Abstract: a b s t r a c tBackground: Dental implant insertion torque is crucial for the success of the implant and the prosthesis. This in-vivo study was undertaken to determine the average insertion torque being applied to the dental implant while surgically placing it with a non-calibrated manual ratchet. Methods: Three dental surgeons placed a total of 45 dental implants (Touareg, ADIN, Afula, Israel) in 42 selected patients. Each surgeon placed 15 implants. Standardised protocols were followed to prepare the site to … Show more

“…3 Implant insertion torque can be assessed by electronic devices integrated with physiodispenser or with torque gauge incorporated with manual ratchets. 11 Insertion torque not only describe the bone quality, rather it is an essential factor for the implant's primary stability and to decide the loading protocol, which in turn is an important factor which decides whether an implant will be successful or not. More value of insertion torque leads to more primary stability.…”

“…10 Methods to measure primary stability includes non-invasive methods such as periotest, Resonance Frequency Analysis (RFA) and the insertion torque. 11 The force required to introduce a dental implant is called insertion torque (IT). It is the requisite torque to place the implant into the prepared osteotomy site.…”

“…These implants were applied in osteotomies with a couple of high torsion (100 N*cm) because the structure of the screw presented deformation of shape and irregular craters, aspects highlighted after the SEM microscopy analysis [14] . This moment of distortion in does not correspond to the dental domain because it can compromise the host bone and damage the osseointegration [17] . It is necessary to diminish it by an additional processing of the screw through carving.…”

“…Esta tendencia coincide en estudios similares realizados por Beer [29] yTurkyilmaz [22], quienes establecieron una correlación entre la densidad, los valores HU y el TI [22], [29]. Por otra parte, según Goswami [30] la medición del TI, es útil para evaluar o identificar la calidad del hueso en función de la densidad y la dureza.…”
