Evaluation of Device-associated Nosocomial Infections in A Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: The duration of hospitalization and the use of mechanical ventilators and central and urinary catheters were related to the increases in nosocomial infections. Therefore, target-oriented active surveillance should be regularly performed, and the superfluous employment of invasive devices should be avoided.

“…3 Despite increased medical and technological facilities, the mortality rate of health care-associated Acinetobacter infections is considerably higher. [12][13][14][15][16] Mortality rates associated with A. baumannii have been reported in 13.9 to 83%. 17 In this study, mortality rates were statistically significantly higher in XDRABIs (54.3%) than control group (2.5%) (p < 0.001).…”

“…2 Nozokomiyal enfeksiyonlar arasında en sık görülen kan dolaşımı enfeksiyonlarıdır (KDE). 5,7 Ülkemizde nozokomiyal enfeksiyonlar içerisinde KDE görülme oranları %7,6-30,2'dir. 5 Literatürde arteriyel ve santral venöz kateterizasyon, parenteral beslenme, mekanik ventilasyon, kan transfüzyonu, nötropeni ve malignite varlığının nozokomiyal KDE riskini artırdığı gösterilmiştir.…”

“…Microbial colonization of an indwelling device may result in surrounding tissue destruction, systemic spreading of pathogen followed by serious illness and death . These infections are predominantly caused by Gram‐positive bacteria such as staphylococci or Gram‐negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Microbial adhesion can result to biofilm formation in which cells are embedded within a self‐produced extracellular substance in association with a solid surface .…”
