“…In various studies from Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, the United States and Belgium, mange prevalences from 20% to 86% were recorded (Flesjaˆand Ulvesaeter 1979;Hollanders and Vercruysse 1990;Gualandi et al 1994;Davies et al 1996;Gutie´rrez et al 1996;Alonso de Vega et al 1997;Melancon 1998;Smets and Vercruysse 2000). “…The samples were considered positive at a cut off of 0.4 corrected optical density (ODr) for sera (Smets and Vercruysse, 2000), and of 0.5 ODr for the extracts of diaphragmatic muscle (Meet Juice-MJ) (Vercruysse et al, 2006). The statistical correlation between the results of the four tests was calculated with the Spearman_s Correlation Coefficient.…”

“…In our study, there was distinct difference in the rate at which S. scabiei spread in the three pens in which a seeder pig was placed. Ear scraping examinations indicated that in one pen, six out of 14 pigs were infected on day 28 of the experiment, while in the two other pens, only one S. scabiei mites are found predominantly on the face and in the ears of pigs (13,33), and of all conventional diagnostic methods to detect S. scabiei infection, examination of ear scrapings is the most sensitive (28). However, it is a question whether this method is sensitive enough to detect infection at any time during the infectious period.…”
