A seafloor observation network (SON) consists of a large number of heterogeneous devices that monitor the deep sea and communicate with onshore data centers. Due to the long-distance information transmission and the risk of malicious attacks, ensuring the integrity of data in transit is essential. A cryptographically secure frame check sequence (FCS) has shown great advantages in protecting data integrity. However, the commonly used FCS has a collision possibility, which poses a security risk; furthermore, reducing the encryption calculation cost is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a secure, lightweight encryption scheme for transmitted data inspired by mimic defense from dynamic heterogeneous redundancy theory. Specifically, we use dynamic keys to encrypt a data block and generate multiple encrypted heterogeneous blocks for transmission. These continuously changing encrypted data blocks increase the confusion regarding the original encoded data, making it challenging for attackers to interpret and modify the data blocks. Additionally, the redundant information from the multiple blocks can identify and recover tampered data. Our proposed scheme is suitable for resource-constrained environments where lightweight encryption is crucial. Through experimental demonstrations and analysis methods, we determine the effectiveness of our encryption scheme in reducing computational costs and improving security performance to protect data integrity.

During the past few decades, research on digital media watermarking -initially designed for digital images with the envisioned applications of copyright protection or copy control-has significantly evolved with respect to other covers (i.e., video, audio, speech) and many more potential applications, including tamper detection, broadcast monitoring, and, more recently, fake news detection. As a result, various surveys have tried to summarize certain aspects of this research field as it has grown. This has led to more than 130 survey papers being written at different points in time, describing various parts of the scientific efforts focused on digital media watermarking. Considering the above, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, we conduct a meta-survey based on 64 selected research works, in order to summarize the most notable survey papers in this field, which allows us to ''draw a map'' of this research area. Second, we focus on providing the requirements for digital watermarking techniques when applied to their most recent application: detecting fake news in multimedia content. Finally, an outline of the approach taken within the DISSIMILAR (Detection of fake newS on SocIal MedIa pLAtfoRms) project for the detection of disinformation is presented.

Image watermarking often involves the use of handheld devices under non-structured conditions for authentication purposes, particularly in the print-cam process where smartphone cameras are used to capture watermarked printed images. However, these images frequently suffer from perspective distortions, making them unsuitable for automated information detection. To address this issue, Cam-Unet, an end-to-end neural network architecture, is presented to predict the mapping from distorted images to rectified ones, specifically tailored for print-cam challenges applied to ID images. Given the limited availability of large-scale real datasets containing ground truth distortions, we created an extensive synthetic dataset by subjecting undistorted images to print-cam attacks. The proposed network is trained on this dataset, using various data augmentation techniques to improve its generalization capabilities. Accordingly, this paper presents an image watermarking system for the print-cam process. The approach combines Fourier transform-based watermarking with Cam-Unet as perspective distortion correction. Results show that the proposed method outperforms existing watermarking approaches typically employed to counter print-cam attacks and achieves an optimal balance between efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
