Evaluation of Diuretic activity of Fractional Extracts of Ajuga remota Benth (Lamiaceae) in Albino mice

Abstract: The present study was evaluated the in vivo diuretic activity of fractional extracts of A. remota in albino mice. The dried aqueous crude extracts were subjected to soxhlet extraction by n-butanol, methanol and water solvents. The mice were randomly divided into eleven groups with 8 mice in each. All fractions were administered orally at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg to adult male mice, and the positive and negative controls were treated with furosemide (10 mg/kg, p.o) and the vehicle distilled water (2 ml/… Show more

“…A. integrifolia Buch., A. remota Benth.) leaves and aerial parts (rich in phenolic acids) were found as potent in vivo diuretics in rodent studies (Hailu and Engidawork, 2014;Chilo and Raju, 2021). Diuretic action measured in a rat study for A. remota fractions (in doses of 250, 500 and 1,000 mg/kg) revealed values between 1.05 and 2.53, while diuretic activity was shown as varying between 0.41 and 0.99 in comparison with positive control, furosemide respectively (Chilo and Raju, 2021).…”

According to previous published works (Gujral et al, 1955;Hailu and Engidawork, 2014), a good diuretic activity is described by values above 1.5, but as long as there are no other reports regarding diuretic effects of other thyme species, we prefer to be cautious and define T. comosus as a mild diuretic agent, this statement being a good start point for further confirmations regarding this effect by human studies.…”
