Evaluation of economic indicators for Czech dairy farms

Abstract: Milk production is one of the most important areas of the Czech agrarian sector, as evidenced by its 50% share (at 2017 prices) in revenues from livestock production. As for any business, a certain level of profitability is a prerequisite for long-term and sustainable development of dairy farms. This study’s aim was to evaluate the economic efficiency of milk production from both Czech Fleckvieh (C) and Holstein (H) cows based on data collected each year from 48 to 70 Czech dairy farms in the period from 2012 … Show more

“…We deducted the value of secondary outputs from total costs and termed this value 'costs after deduction'. We defined secondary outputs of animal production as the value of calves (EUR 114.4 per calf ) and manure (EUR 27.8 per cow and year) (Syrůček et al 2019).…”

“…Milk purchase prices are considered one of the main factors influencing the economic efficiency of milk production (e.g. Syrůček et al 2019;Bórawski et al 2021) and reflect the situation in the European and international milk markets (Bełdycka-Bórawska et al 2021). Price variability is due to fluctuating supply and demand on the market depending on the actual volume of milk on offer and the consumption of milk and dairy products.…”

“…A 10% increase in milk price increased the net return on average to 268 EUR (10% 21-d PR), 292 EUR (20% 21-d PR) and 299 EUR per cow/year (30% 21-d PR) (Table 4). The sensitivity analysis identified milk prices, milk yields, and feed costs as the main factors influencing profitability (Syrucek et al 2019). As milk productivity increases, feed costs also increase and although some studies found that the milk income over feed cost increased with reproductive performance (Giordano et al 2012;Kalantari and Cabrera 2012), other studies reported that the milk income over feed cost could, at times, decrease slightly as reproductive performance increases (Cabrera 2012;Galvao et al 2013).…”

“…As stated by Syrůček et al and Naglová et al, the production of dairy products is a mainstay of the Czech food industry [7,8]. A number of studies deal with the performance of the dairy and food industry in the Czech Republic [8][9][10].…”
