Evaluation of Erythemal UV Effective Irradiance from UV Lamp Exposure and the Application in Shield Metal Arc Welding Processing

Abstract: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is known to cause potential effects such as erythema in skin. For UV-induced erythema (sunburn), the action spectrum from the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage, International Commission on Illumination (CIE) was adopted. Erythemal UV effects from UVR lamp exposure were investigated with commercial spectroradiometry devices in this research. Three kinds of portable UV germicidal lamps with broadband UVA (BB UVA, 350-400 nm), broadband UVB (BB UVB, 280-350 nm), and nar… Show more

“…Minimal erythema dose (MED) is another common measure of UV radiation [ 34 , 35 ]. However, because of the variance in individual sensitivity to UV radiation, MED is more appropriate for observational studies [ 1 , 36 ].…”

“…15 In this study, the LED is creating a dose of less than 2 mJ/cm 2 . Indeed, arc-eye, or welders flash from unprotected exposure of the eye to arc welding, caused by an almost equal mixture of UVA, B and C, 16 usually heals without long-term sequelae. The limit for daily exposure to UV from arc welding, based on corneal exposure at 50 cm from a welding arc has been measured at 0.311 mW/cm 2 , equating to a dose of 3 mJ/ cm 2 over 9.6 s. 17 Within this context, it would appear that a short duration, low dose of UVC, such as that delivered in this study, should be relatively safe.…”

“…The process is considered as most dangerous [6], [9] and its quantified WHI (Table I) to UV radiations are worst among all arc welding processes. Cancer causing [14] UV radiations are responsible for pre-mature retinal damage [8], erythema [13] of welders. Frequent tip positioning is, many a time, performed without even using protective filter screen.…”
