Evaluation of Erythrocyte Disorders With Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW)

Abstract: The red cell distribution width (RDW), which provides a quantitative measure of heterogeneity of red cells in the peripheral blood, and the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are part of the routine red cell indices reported by automated blood analyses. This study evaluated 193 pediatric patients with a wide range of erythrocyte disorders and determined the diagnostic utility of the RDW in relation to the MCV. Six different groups of erythrocyte disorders by MCV and RDW values are described: low MCV/normal RDW, low… Show more

“…Abnormalities in RDW (measure of erythrocyte size variation) occur during iron-deficient erythropoiesis, especially when hemoglobin content (MCHC) falls. 29,30 Cord zinc protoporphyrin/heme ratios in diabetes KB Lesser et al ZnPP/H ratios were similar in those with excellent and poor control. Because of limited number of women with excellent control, the study may have had insufficient power to show lower ZnPP/H ratios with better glycemic control from the glucose logs.…”

“…At approximately PND 4, both RDW and ZnPP/H levels peaked at relatively high values in our rat population. In humans, the RDW indicates variations in red cell size and increases when iron-deficient, microcytic cells join circulating normocytic cells [19]. In humans, the RDW increases as the first clinical sign of functional iron deficiency, followed by changes in ZnPP/H which indicate incomplete incorporation of iron into heme [3,19].…”

“…This finding may indicate microcytic erythrocytes before the decrease of MCV. Although it has not been found yet in studies supporting this correlation in dogs, it is known that human patients with low MCV but high RDW often have iron deficiency or red blood cell fragmentation (Monzon et al, 2006).…”

“…Automated cell analyzers show the distribution of erythrocyte volume in 95% of the blood sample and determine its coefficient of variation (RDW-CV), which is calculated from an equation. This index is related to the MCV and it is expressed in percentage (Balarin et al, 2001;Monzon et al, 2006). The RDW-SD is the standard deviation of the erythrocyte distribution curve, expressed in fentoliter (fL), being a direct measure, which is independent of MCV and so accurately demonstrates the variation in size of an erythrocyte population (Walters, 2002).…”
