Evaluation of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL): Efficacy in Treatment of Urinary System Stones

Abstract: Introduction:Elimination of stone is determined by size and its localization. Stone from the ureter in 80% of cases can be eliminated spontaneously. If the stone by its characteristics is not spontaneously eliminated, taken are further steps and therapeutic protocols to solve this problem.Material and methods:The study was prospective, open and comparative. It was conducted at the Urology Clinic Clinical Center of Sarajevo University in the period from 2007 to 2013. The study included 404 patients with urinary… Show more

“…The same ratio was also reported by Bozkurt, Wiesenthal, Chung, Keshvari, and El-Nahas [5,[10][11][12][13], and an almost identical one by Junuzovic [14]. The Chi-square test showed no significant differences between the male and female patients in the success rate of ESWL, which was consistent with the finding of Tavakkoli [15]; whereas, Gupta and Park reported a higher rate of ESWL success in male patients [8,16].…”

“…Because there was a significant positive correlation between stone size and number of treatments in the total sample, respectively, as the stones was larger needed higher number of treatments [9]. Contrary to that interesting results are presented by Tarawneh and colleagues, who proved an inverse correlation between the performance of ESWL and size of the stone [17].…”

“…Three variables were significantly affecting the success rate namely stone size, number of shock waves and location of stone. [9] have shown that there are no statistically significant correlation between the number of treatments and localization of stones in the ureter, as well as a statistically significant correlation between the size of the stone and the localization of calculus in the ureter. [10] perform (ESWL) of pancreatic stones in eight patients with chronic pancreatitis and a dilated duct system harboring stones 5 to 20 mm (3 × 10 (SD) 5 mm) in diameter.…”

“…2 The successful rate of ESWL as the treatment of all urinary tract stone was 96%. 3 Another supporting research showed, about 87% stone free rate was achieved after three months follow up in urethral stone treatment by using ESWL and no major complications found. 4 The aimed of this study was to describe the urinary stone characteristic in male and female patient who underwent ESWL at CMH, Jakarta, during [2008][2009][2010][2011][2012][2013][2014].…”

“…Recent studies have shown that stone made of calcium oxalate dihydrate are easier to break rather than uric acid stone. 3 Studies made by Tarawneh stated that there were positive correlation between stone size and number of ESWL treatment. 23 This study result also showed, that the number of male patients who come for continued treatment was higher than female patients.…”
