Evaluation of gaseous allyl isothiocyanate against the growth of mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxin production in corn stored for 6 months

Abstract: Prophylactic treatment with AITC reduced the fungal population and inhibited fumonisin B production in stored corn, exhibiting great potential to be applied in corn silos to prevent fungi contamination and minimize mycotoxin levels. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…This demonstrated a precise approach to record the effect of yeast VOCs on mono-spore fungal mass. In a similar approach, the addition of 50 µL/L of gaseous allyl isothiocyanate in the fungal growth media resulted in the inhibition of Aspergillus parasiticus growth at 3.17 log CFU/g as compared to the control [ 24 ]. In line with the present study, inoculation of a baker’s yeast in the liquid media having A. flavus spore suspension resulted in 15.4 to 41.6% decreased AFB1 synthesis [ 25 ].…”

“…On the one hand, despite the large reduction of AFB 1 provoked by CFS application, the levels of AFB 1 were higher than those set by the European Union (5 ng/g). On the other hand, the levels of AFB 1 and FB 1 were lower than those established by the FDA (20 ng/g of AFB 1 and 2000 ng/g of FB 1 ) to non-processed corn for human consumption [58][59][60].…”
