Evaluation of general nutrition knowledge in elite Australian athletes

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate and benchmark the level of general nutrition knowledge in elite Australian athletes (EA) against a similar aged community (CM) and criterion sample with dietetic training (DT). EA (n 175), CM (n 116) and DT (n 53) completed the General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ), which assesses four domains (sections A -D) of general nutrition knowledge (section A: dietary guidelines; section B: sources of nutrients; section C: choosing everyday foods; section D: di… Show more

“…Similar trends in nutrition knowledge disparity between athletes and non-athletes have been observed [22,23]. Furthermore, the difference in nutrition knowledge between the athletic population and nutrition trained group in this study are similar the previous research [14], providing further corroborating of the validity of the NKQA as a tool measure nutrition knowledge.…”

“…Frederick and Hawkins [16] modified an existing 20-question nutrition knowledge questionnaire, 27 track athletes and 14 college students (nutrition major) completed the instrument scoring 77.9 and 87.3% respectively (p < 0.05). More recently Spendlove et al [14] use a questionnaire developed by Parmenter et al, [21] to differentiate nutrition knowledge in elite Australian athletes (n 175) and a dietetic trained (n 53) cohort, scoring 57.6 and 86.2% respectively. Interestingly the results from the current study demonstrate that the lowest scoring subsection in the questionnaire for the athletes were fluid (53.8%) and sport nutrition (55.2%), which may be deemed as most specific to this population.…”

“…Previous studies found that gaining knowledge is one of the first stages of a move towards a change of behaviour. Nutrition knowledge is therefore an essential basis for good dietary habits (Alderman, 2007;Spendlove et al, 2012). Individuals who had better nutrition knowledge had a more positive attitude towards eating healthier foods (Garcia-Lascurain, Kicklighter, Jonnalagadda, Boudolf, & Duchon, 2006;Heaney, O'Connor, Michael, Gifford, & Naughton, 2011).…”
