Evaluation of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in blackgram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper]

Abstract: An attempt was made to study blackgram germplasm with an objective to develop genetically diverse genotypes accompanied with high heritable components of yield contributing traits. The experimental material comprised of 21 blackgram genotypes, was examined during kharif 2015 and 2016. Experimental study conducted during kharif 2015, was mainly relied on selection of transgressive segregants, which were further analyzed in Compact Family Block Design during kharif 2016. The results depic… Show more

“…Results obtained from these components of genetic parameter indicate presence of abundant amount of genetic variability in the material under present investigation. These findings are in authorisation with the findings on the reports of Chowdhury et al, (2020), Singh et al, (2020), Sathees et al, (2019), Chauhan et al, (2018), Priya et al, (2018), Verma et al, (2018, Sinha et al, (2018), Panigrahi et al, (2014), Singh et al, (2014), Sowmini and Jayamani (2013).…”

“…The traits were seed yield per plant (18.89%), plant height (11.32%), number of pods per cluster (10.5%) showed moderate phenotypic coefficient of variation. Similar results were reported by Chauhan et al [14], Sowmini et al [15]. Heritability varied from 17.11% (Pod length) to 92.71% (Biological yield).…”

“…Hence, it offers a better scope for further improvement of breeding material by the selection of promising genotypes in blackgram breeding programme. The significant variation for all the traits was also observed by earlier workers viz., Kumar et al (2017) for seed yield, number of branches, pods, clusters, 100-seed weight, fodder biomass and harvest index; Chauhan et al (2018) for all studied traits; Bandi et al (2018) for days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length (cm), number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight (g) and grain yield per plant (g) in blackgram.…”
