This study evaluated the susceptibility to groundwater pollution using a modified DRASTIC model. A novel hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model integrating Interval Rough Numbers (IRN), Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), and Analytical Network Process (ANP) was used to investigate the interrelationships between critical hydrogeologic factors (and determine their relative weights) via a novel vulnerability index based on the DRASTIC model. The flexibility of GIS in handling spatial data was employed to delineate thematic map layers of the hydrogeologic factors and to improve the DRASTIC model. The hybrid MCDM model results show that net recharge (a key hydrogeologic factor) had the highest priority with a weight of 0.1986. In contrast, the topography factor had the least priority, with a weight of 0.0497. A case study validated the hybrid model using Anambra State, Nigeria. The resultant vulnerability map shows that 12.98% of the study area falls into a very high vulnerability class, 31.90% falls into a high vulnerability, 23.52% falls into the average vulnerability, 21.75% falls into a low vulnerability, and 9.85% falls into very low vulnerability classes, respectively. In addition, nitrate concentration was used to evaluate the degree of groundwater pollution. Based on observed nitrate concentration, the modified DRASTIC model was validated and compared to the traditional DRASTIC model; interestingly, the spatial model of the modified DRASTIC model performed better. This study is thus critical for environmental monitoring and implementing appropriate management interventions to protect groundwater resources against indiscriminate sources of pollution.

The main objective of this work was to study the status of groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation uses in the locality of Beni Ounif. A total of 16 samples were taken at different locations in the study area from boreholes to capture the continental intercalary (CI) aquifer for physicochemical analysis. This work used the groundwater quality index (GWQI) method to evaluate water potability. The irrigation water quality was assessed by studying EC, SAR, Na%, KR, PI, and MR parameters. In addition, the mechanisms of mineralization of these waters were highlighted by the study of Piper, Gibbs, bivariate diagrams, and the calculation of saturation indices. The results show that the CI waters would have chemical constituents in accordance with the WHO guide values and the Algerian guide values for drinking water. The GWQI method showed a good quality of CI waters for consumption in the study area. On based the irrigation water parameters, the IC water samples are acceptable for irrigation provided that drainage techniques are applied to the cultivated land for tipsy soil salinization. In addition, the study of Piper, Gibbs, bivariate, and mineral saturation diagrams shows that the CI waters of the study area are of Ca-Mg-SO 4 -Cl type, and the hydrogeochemical processes that control their mineralization are complex, namely, the alteration of silicate and carbonate minerals, the dissolution of gypsum and exchange ion.

Groundwater is an indispensable source of water for drinking water supply, agriculture and industry worldwide. In arid and semi-arid regions, groundwater has seriously deteriorated in recent decades due to environmental changes, anthropogenic activities and marine intrusion. A total of 79 groundwater samples from the Nekor-Ghiss plain were sampled for major chemical ion analysis. These analyzes showed that the water samples were highly mineralized (>1,500 mg/L), with hardness (83.5% of the samples were very hard) and high concentrations of chemical elements, such as Cl−, Mg2+, Na+ and SO42-. To assess the quality of water in the study area for irrigation and consumption purposes, we used the quality index (GWQI) as well as a multi-criteria analysis based on “geographic information system” by assigning a weight to the different water quality parameters. Also, Piper and Durov diagram was investigated. The results of the study were focused on the water quality parameters of the collected groundwater samples, such as the sodium adsorption rate (SAR), the percentage of soluble sodium (Na%), the Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) and Permeability Index (PI) Majority of water samples in the study area are suitable to be used for irrigation. Magnesium Risk (MH) and Kelley’s Ratio Kelly ratio. 51.9% unsuitable samples to 59.49% good samples for irrigation purposes. Monitoring the quality and quantity of groundwater is crucial for the effective and sustainable management of this valuable resource. According to the results obtained, it appears that 92% of all the samples are located in the domain of frequent recharge waters of limestone and dolomitic aquifers, namely, Ca-Mg-HCO3. About 8% of the samples measured have a composition of the Ca-Na-Mg-HCO3 type.
