Evaluation of groundwater quality based on radiological and hydrochemical data from two uraniferous regions of Western Iberia: Nisa (Portugal) and Ciudad Rodrigo (Spain)

Abstract: The regions of Nisa (Portugal) and Ciudad Rodrigo (Spain) are characterized by a high radiation background due to the presence of uranium-enriched rocks. To evaluate the water quality of the shallow aquifers and the relationship between radiological and non-radiological variables, a set of 41 samples was collected (mainly from springs) and analyzed for the radioisotopes 238 U, 234 U, 226 Ra and 222 Rn as well as for some major and minor cations. The results obtained for the cationic composition in both areas s… Show more

“…Radon gas is preferably concentrated in the organic phase, immediately below of cocktail level (double-phase method; [60]). The analytical procedures were performed in the Laboratory of Natural Radioactivity (LRN)-University of Coimbra, following the methods available in Pereira et al [61]. Groundwater radon isotope was measured on the Perkin-Elmer ® Quantullus 1220 ultra-sensitive spectrometer with Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC).…”

“…As regards other European Countries, several data are available in the literature for the radon content in groundwaters in crystalline aquifers. Very high radon values (up to ∼ 4000 Bq L −1 ) were detected in some areas of Germany, Spain and Portugal [13,14], where Variscan metamorphic rocks and granites, quite similar to those outcropping in the Calabro-Peloritani Orogen, represent the dominant lithology. It is interesting to underline that the dissolved radon concentration measured in southern Calabria and north-eastern Sicily (data from Pizzino et al [47], Caridi and Belmusto [36] and this work) is considerably lower in comparison to the typical signature of the European Variscan rocks (see table 3).…”
