Evaluation of Health Status and Quality of Life after Bariatric Surgery: Comparison of Standard Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty and Laparoscopic Adjustable Silicone Gastric Banding

Abstract: By utilizing BAROS it has been found possible to compare the results of different procedures done by different surgeons with different techniques, utilizing patients from different cultures and with different languages. The results of this comparative study favor the standard gastric bypass for the treatment of morbid obesity. This operation is superior to purely gastric restrictive procedures in weight loss and improvement of quality of life.

“…93 The only nonrandomized trial comparing the laparoscopic-adjustable gastric band to gastric bypass concluded that gastric bypass caused significantly greater weight loss. 9 Effects of bariatric surgery on obesity comorbidity Each of the reports acknowledges the improvement in obesity comorbidity with surgical weight loss. However, their endorsement of this fact is guarded.…”

“…So, our study keeps an interest for the QoL and weight loss follow-up of the patients who benefited from such restrictive procedures. Hell et al (2000) compared QoL (through Moorehead-Ardelt questionnaire), loss of weight and comorbidities improvement with these three types of surgical techniques in a prospective nonrandomized study over 3-8 years in three groups of 30 operated patients from two different institutions as compared with a control group of non-operated obese patients. A significant improvement of QoL and comorbidities was observed in operated obese patients, regardless of the type of surgery, compared to the control group.…”

“…One study compared vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG), gastric banding techniques, and gastric bypass with conventional weight loss treatment. 55 Five studies compared surgery patients to normal weight subjects, [51][52][53]56,57 one study to a nonoperated control sample, 58 another study compared VBG with elective, open cholecystectomy. 59 Table 3 illustrates the mean sample sizes, dropout rates, and follow-up periods of the 40 studies reviewed.…”

“…Besides the SOS study (EC IIa), 55 three EC IIb studies 58,64,101 and three EC III studies 54,59,102 focused on aspects of general QoL. The SOS study 5,55 applied a battery of generic and study-specific self-assessment instruments or subscales in order to characterize various aspects of QoL such as health perception, mental well-being/mood disorders, eating behavior, and psychosocial functioning in the severely obese.…”
